I've camped in a few areas of the Tonto National Forest. It's dry camping, $6/night for us younger folks, $3/night for Golden Age pass holders. You need to purchase the passes outside the camping areas, so don't show up there without first stopping to pick up passes. My favorite of the Tonto National Forest areas is Roosevelt Lake.There are several campgrounds on the lake which all seem similar. I stayed at Windy Hill. http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/tonto/recreation/camping-cabins/recarea/?recid=35739&actid=31
There are 347 camp units w/ shade ramadas, fire rings w/ grills, picnic tables. There are no hookups, but there are potable water hydrants, trash bins, toilets and showers. The shower water is solar heated and plenty hot. The sites are fairly large and level. There is no dump station, but there's one located near Cholla campground, about 10 miles north, with limited hours. Some sites are double where 2 RVs can park. There's hiking and kayaking in the area (some a short drive away) and it's close to Tonto National Monument and the Apache Trail. NOTE: DO NOT take an RV over AZ 88 from Apache Junction!
I camped here in April and the weather was perfect. I imagine it gets hot in the summer.
