This is where I fell in love with the desert.
There are numerous places in and near Borrego Springs you can boondock for free on public and private land.
During my first RV trip to Borrego Springs, my friends and I stayed beside a dirt road (about one mile off County Route S2) that ultimately takes you to Ghost Mountain where the South family lived for 15 years (Google it). The road had some sections of serious washboard, but was driveable and the location was very quiet and remote.
There's free camping NE of town along County Hwy S22 on the way to Salton City. Large groups gather here for Thanksgiving (and perhaps in the winter months as well).
There are metal sculptures in the desert on land owned by Dennis Avery (of Avery labels). This land, called Galleta Meadows Estates, is available for free camping for 3 days.
The metal sculptures are a must see while in Borrego Springs. The state park visitor center west of town is one of the nicest visitor centers we've been to. Kendall's Cafe for breakfast was pretty good. Early springtime flowers blooming are incredibly beautiful some years.
My favorite part of my visits to Borrego Springs is the night sky. Borrego Springs has been designated a Dark-Sky community. Dark sky and low humidity make this optimum territory for stargazers.
